I am the mother of a heroin addict…BUT I am also a wife, sister, friend, dog owner, a die-hard “Who Dat” New Orleans Saints fan, a lover of all things chocolate, a blogger, a speaker and an educator/advocate for family members dealing with a loved one’s addiction/alcoholism. It is important that I state this upfront because for the first five years of my daughter’s addiction I lost the ability to identify as anything other than the mother of an addict. I was as lost in my daughter’s addiction as she was. She was addicted to substances that altered her mental state and I was addicted to her. She became obsessed with the drink and the drug and I became obsessed with her.

If this rings true to you, I hope you will stick around and become a fellow traveler with me as I continue to navigate the dark and murky shadow land of addiction. In this blog I will examine numerous topics

on recovery, such as codependency, enabling, and detachment. I will discuss the impact that addiction has had on my faith life and its deconstruction along with the effect that the disease has had on my social, political, and psychological life stances. In addition, I will also examine current writers, doctors, scholars, researchers; leading forces in the field of addiction and policy making, in an attempt to create and provide educational opportunities to inform and raise awareness around the issues of substance abuse.
